Why spicy food can stimulate bowel movements
Many people notice that digestion works better after a spicy soup or a meal with chilli. Chilli contains capsaicin, a compound that activates heat and pain receptors. In some people, this can stimulate bowel activity and lead to a bowel movement sooner. The meal itself also plays a role. Warm soups provide fluids and may contain vegetables, legumes and spices. Together, these can support digestion. People who have eaten spicy food regularly since childhood often tolerate chilli better. Reactions vary from person to person. With reflux, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome or diarrhoea, spicy food can make symptoms worse. Please note: More frequent bowel movements do not automatically mean “detoxification”. The liver, kidneys, lungs and intestines carry out their normal elimination and metabolic functions every day.
Why herbal schnapps may seem to help with stomach discomfort in the short term
Some people feel temporarily better after a small herbal schnapps when they have a feeling of fullness, bloating or discomfort after a heavy meal. Herbs such as gentian, wormwood, anise and fennel contain bitter compounds. These may stimulate digestive secretions. The warmth and alcohol may also have a temporarily relaxing effect. However, this does not mean that herbal schnapps is a treatment for stomach pain. Alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms such as reflux or gastritis. If stomach pain is severe or keeps coming back, it is advisable to have the cause assessed by a doctor. Seek medical help promptly if you have vomiting, black stools, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or severe nighttime pain.
